As a Black queer person doing social justice work with a focus on the queer community, I bring a unique perspective and experience that is invaluable to the work that we do. It’s important for people to see someone like me in this role because it challenges preconceived notions of who can do this work and who it is for.

Representation matters, and when young Black queer people see someone like me working in these fields, it can inspire them to pursue similar paths, or any path, and feel like they belong in spaces. It also sends a powerful message to the wider community that Black queer people are not only a part of the queer community, but we are also leaders and advocates for change.

Additionally, the work that I do for the queer community benefits the Black community in numerous ways. The LGBTQ+ community intersects with many other marginalized communities, including communities of color. By advocating for the rights and well-being of the queer community, I am also advocating for the rights and well-being of Black LGBTQ+ people.

The work that I do helps to break down the societal structures that perpetuate oppression and marginalization, which benefits all communities. When we fight for equity and equality, we are fighting for a world in which everyone can thrive, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, or any other aspect of their identity.

My presence and work as a Black queer person in the social justice field is essential for creating a world in which everyone can live freely and authentically.
