Being non-straight, Black, and Jewish one would think that my palate of discussion would be far reaching and cross so many sections of society. However, it seems that many of my recent post have focused on the lack of representation of Black gays in the media… Or the myopic representation of effeminate Black gays in the media… Either way the trend of my recent communications will continue on this particular topic.

Recently, in honor of St. Valentine’s Day, Advocate.com editors put out a photo slide show entitled “Couples to Admire“. As I panned through the images I was surprised by a few things:
1) Lesbian couples are stalwarts in representing non-hetero relationships (ok not surprising)
2) Gay male couples are very “youthful” (commitment issues or less in the media?)
3) Wanda Sykes should not be the only brown gay face in the mix (are there really no brown male stars?)

Now, I know there are brown gay male actors out there…I watched a great many of them in “Noah’s Arc“–maybe all of them appeared on that show. Yes, as I think of it we saw Darryl Stephens to Wilson Cruz. OK, now when I say media I do also mean news, politics and other forms of entertainment–my commentary on politics as entertainment can be found next week on my other blog.

I look at some of the leading LGBT and human rights organizations out there and I wonder how have they helped to combat the limited representation, and advancement, of brown gay males in the media. Is there a call for action? Is there an outward demonstration of solidarity? Have they realized their inaction really is a statement of action?

I want to see people that look like me. I want people to see people that look like me and have a variety of backgrounds. I want those who are representative of me to engage with society in many different ways. I want those who are like me currently in main stream arenas of the media to feel ok with standing up and stepping out.

Sadly I don’t know how to fix this issue of representation of gay brown males in the media–I really wish I did. But let’s talk more and see where it goes. In a recent article Ricky Cervantes talks about the “Brown Elephant in the Room” and it is a great start to this conversation. Like Ricky, I am not a star, but I am more than willing to stand up and step out. I can share my story, I can lend my voice, I can be a face for those who are seemingly faceless.

Thanks Ricky Martin…but really the rest of y’all…COME OUT ALREADY!
