WHAT CAN WE DO…
We can acknowledge the gun problem in this country.
We can acknowledge the hate in this country.
We can fix the gun problem in this country.
We can fix the hate problem in this country.
We enact sensible guns laws that directly keep guns, all forms of guns, out of the hands of people who have no reason to have them.
We stop enacting, and suggesting, laws that ensure it is ok to blatantly discriminate against people.
We simply realize and see each other’s humanity…our desire to be happy…to live our lives authentically without persecution—so long as we aren’t hurting anyone.
Many in the queer community, the LGBTQIA+ community, the greater human community have been deeply affected by this incident in Colorado Springs at Club Q and while it is painful it is also something we must uplift.
Gun violence is an issue in this country and its impact on the LGBTQIA+ community is overwhelming and now fueled by horrible anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric.
Threats. Assaults. Murders. Suicides. These are all impacts of gun violence on the queer community—and at astronomically higher rates than non-queer identities.
Our community needs to know people are there and care for us and our safety—our ability to find spaces where we can be ourselves without fear of that safety being shattered. I think, in this moment, anything that our greater human community can do to demonstrate public support for the community will affirm our identities—and that they are wanted…no, needed here.
