June 15, 2020 I stepped into an interim role that would help guide Columbus’ LGBTQIA+ center and organization as it continues on a path of transition—know better, be better, do better.

June 2020 marked some of the first moments that I stepped out into the public as the Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus. To say I was/am nervous/anxious would somehow seem an understatement for the

role in which I’ve stepped.

Columbus is poised to see record growth as we currently sit as the 14th largest city in the country; our queer/LGBTQIA+ community, here in Columbus and at-large, demands that our organizations truly reflect the intersections of our fight and individual identities within; our cultural battle with the realities of race and gender supremacy are at a height; and the shifting generational leadership in so many sectors has left us in a true fever pitch.

As all things these times too shall pass…but will the journey be rough and will we be ok and together along the way?

I have a belief that #StonewallColumbus can be a truly wonderful model of a community center and organization that serves the beautiful rainbow of queer identities across central Ohio—frankly beyond.

It would show hubris of me to believe I could do this on my own—I do know we are stronger together. I look forward to working with Columbus’ local community and the community at large to help create an organization that which if not serves all of our queer/LGBTQIA+ identities works to uplift and help create space for them.

For the last 20+ years of existence @StonewallColumbus was lead by fearless female identities, one of whom was the first person of color to lead the organization in its then 37 year history. The weight of the statement “all eyes are on you” never seemed so palpable—at least not for me (and I was a thespian/actor in school…lol at least I thought so!).

To be the first queer, male leaning, person of color to guide the organization in its 40 year history in of itself shows change in the organization but also assures that in this moment of our shared cultural history the expectations for success are likely questioned and impeded daily versus simply championed and supported.

I say this as we get to know each other:
—Always know my intentions are for the good of the greater community
—I believe in giving grace and in return I ask for grace. I likely won’t always do things the way you may like…hopefully that’s ok if you know my intentions are always positive
—Be patient with me…I’ll try to move as quickly as I can..but some things do take time—especially if we don’t have the resources (money…staff)
—You didn’t hirer me…but I’m here…have faith I’m here to help do the most good for the most people…or take the time to dig into my body of work/life
—The expectations for my performance are greater than anyone in this role before… I’ll just let you sit with that

I’m excited about this journey; I’m anxious to see how/if our community finds the space to be gracious with each other so that we can do the greatest amount of good; I hope for however long my relationship with @StonewallColumbus exists, as it’s executive guide, that I’ve worked with the community to set us on the best path forward.
