40,000 state laws placed in effect today

Roughly 40,000 state laws took effect at the start of the new year change rules about getting abortions in New Hampshire, learning about gays and lesbians in California, getting jobs in Alabama and even driving golf carts in Georgia.

NBC News, the National Conference of State Legislatures, The Associated Press, and other organizations tracked the changes and offered their views on the highlights.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) found an assortment of laws in at least 21 states that became effective on New Year’s Day. You can read the list which represents a sampling of some of the new state laws (organized alphabetically by topic) ringing in the new year here.
